WHO WE ARE
A Brief History: After September 11, members of Pax
Christi and of the Society of Friends wanted to find ways to respond to the
crisis and to work toward peace. At the same time, members of the YVCC and
Heritage College communities hosted several community forums exploring issues
raised by September 11. From these separate groupings, we came together in early
2002 as the Yakima Valley Peace Advocates Network (YVPAN). As our first major
public activity in May, 2002, YVPAN brought Bishop Gumbleton to Yakima to meet
with community leaders and to speak about peace and human rights at a large
public meeting.
Today: YVPAN is a loose-knit peace coalition involving
many different individuals and groups in the Yakima Valley. We are teachers,
lawyers, doctors, students, nurses, farm workers, parents, grandparents, office
workers, veterans, child care workers, retirees, and more. We include Catholics,
Quakers, Unitarians, Methodists, Muslims, members of the Bahai faith, and
others. We are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. We are people of all
colors, ages, and persuasions. And we are growing.
YVPAN is united in opposing the use of military force to solve
conflicts and in advocating peaceful solutions. We are united in our
determination to give voice to our belief that another world, a peaceful world,
is possible. We support and join with the millions of people around the world
who are demonstrating for peace and human rights. While we may differ with each
other on our analysis of events and on strategies for peace, we are united in
our opposition to war and in our quest for peace.
